The Virtuous Woman
Proverbs 31:10
“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.”
What is virtue
How do I know if I am virtuous…
Who can find a Virtuous Woman? Big question these days. Society has changed so dramatically over the years, that at times we can’t even recognize true virtue. Whether life swings in one direction or another, it is a quality that has not been forgotten and certainly one that God still requires of His children. But WHY does He require it and what would it do for us over the course of our lifetime? How could it really change us?
Some would say that the mention of the word Virtue is old fashioned and not very modern. Is that because society has turned away from God to a degree that this quality has “disappeared” from our values as women? I would certainly think not. A Virtuous Woman is so much more than what some view as “prudish” and that the free spirit doesn’t allow for this type of behavior…. but in reality, it is extremely important.
To have the Virtuous lifestyle and/or mentality would be to resist the urges to do whatever, whenever taking that “come what may” attitude. But God sees these qualities differently. He requires us to be caregivers to our children, our families, to the elderly, show humility in our affairs, manage our households, (whether married or not), be good stewards of money, give our time and resources to help others in need, take care of our bodies, eating well and exercising, feeding the poor, etc.
But most importantly, striving to have a relationship with Him. A real relationship. One that sets us apart from others; a relationship that changes us continuously. When we read Proverbs 31, it outlines everything that God is looking for, in us, as women.
Too many Rules
I don’t even know where to begin…
Virtue can mean many things. Not just outwardly aspects like kindness, wisdom, gentle spirit, helping others, keeping your reputation intact, saying no to things or people that can damage your very being etc. God requires us to think on things that are completely different than what we see on a daily basis and to change our behaviors and thoughts.
But it can be difficult, especially when we are pulled from this direction to that. And in today’s world, with all the distractions and demands we deal with daily from working, raising a family, paying bills, cooking, cleaning, being a good wife, mother, etc., the responsibilities can be overwhelming. So, the questions remains, “Who has the time?”
But the more time we spend with God and in His word, we realize the need to prioritize each segment of our lives, slow down (harder to do for those of us that move at a pace that would equal a marathon runner-like myself), and take the time to focus on what we are really doing with our thoughts and all the people in our lives.
So, attempt to reflect on what you are currently surrounding yourself with and also “who or what” you are interacting with on a daily basis. Begin to make different choices, connect with God in prayer and see what He wants you to begin to change, to move towards that virtuous lifestyle. It may not happen overnight, but as long as you continue down your pathway with Him, your heart and your thoughts will change miraculously. You will automatically want to do better, be better, not only for yourself, but for everyone around you. It is a wonderful transformation to take. And once you make that decision, you will never look back.
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things”.
