Explore each Room

Start from the Beginning

Before you decide what and how you want to decorate your home, first and foremost, decide what elements are going to go into each room.

Start with a Theme that you want to go with, but make sure it matches the architecture inside and out. Nothing worse than living with a Modern Farmhouse exterior and walking into an Interior that looks like an Industrial warehouse.

Just saying that, made my brain explode.

Visualization is key

  • As I work with clients in design, helping them to visualize this concept is a huge undertaking. Attempting to decorate an entire house at the same time is a lot of work, which is why working room to room is a better idea and it helps you to process through it all. There are three rooms in every house that need immediate attention. The bedroom, living room and dining room/breakfast nook.

  • Once you have those completed, everything else falls into place. These are the spaces that we spend the majority of our time, so we need to start there first. The largest pieces of furniture are also in these three rooms and we want to get it right, so they complement well together.

Mixing elements and Themes

  • I mentioned earlier that you really need the flow to move freely throughout and you want a specific look, so that you get away from the mixed-matched items we have all collected over the years. You can always re-purpose a favorite antique or a beautiful item that was passed down from a loved one, so don’t think that everything has to go out to the curb. Some designers will try to get you to throw it all away and start fresh, but I don’t recommend that, especially if you have grandma’s armoire and wouldn’t dream of getting rid of it.

  • Once you have an idea of a theme, go room to room in decorating each one. Think about the pieces that you have added, the colors, any accessories and get a feel for how it looks. If your happy with the way it turns out, then you are ready for the next room(s). This isn’t a race and it doesn’t all have to be done in 30 days.

  • Take your time and really think about your choices, because the costs can be extreme and the last thing you want is to regret your decisions. I always tell my clients to make a plan, write it down, get pictures of what you want, paint samples, fabric swatches, etc. Otherwise, you aren’t prepared and frustration will eventually set in.

Decorating can be so much fun if you work all the elements correctly. If you are creative and understand space planning, measuring and sizes, colors, etc., then a DIY project is right for you. But most people are not that savvy (like purchasing a sofa that is too big and sticks out like a sore thumb- I’ve seen it happen a thousand times) and hiring a professional is always the best way to go.

You need another opinion, someone that can help to guide you into the right direction and look at things differently to give you another perspective if needed. In time it will all come together and all of your hard work will pay off, but don’t expect it to happen overnight. You will be thankful you gave it some thought in the long run.
