Old to New

Creativity and Style

We all have different tastes in homes, some like the newer modern styles, while others love the older romantic looks.

Whatever your style is you can achieve just about anything, whether you build new or transform an existing home.

It takes a lot of creativity and some knowledge about home building to take on a complete renovation, but with hard work and a heartfelt vision, you can make your dreams a reality.

Never follow Trends

  • One of my biggest dreams is to find an old, Victorian or European house, estate home or castle and renovate it. Keeping with the original architecture as much as possible, but re-modeling the entire structure back to its original state.

  • As stated earlier, if you are following a current trend in home building, make sure it’s a trend you really like. I’ve known people that purchase older homes from every era, because they like that particular look and aren’t interested with the newer, modern looks that constantly change year after year. Don’t be fooled by the latest issue of House Beautiful or Architectural Digest and think just because a particular person raves about the SoHo New York look, that you should go in that direction.

  • I’ve mentioned before, don’t follow trends, go with your heart and what you like and never let a designer tell you any different. It’s your home, your concept, your vision.

Interiors are changing

  • All over the world, you see different types of architecture that are keeping with the culture where they reside. Old isn’t always the wrong decision; it can reflect memories of a childhood spent with family and friends growing up. Architecture has changed so much over the years, that interiors with an open concept, that have been so popular, aren’t so much these days. A sense of closeness, adding more walls and niches to create warmth and tranquility are becoming the norm.

  • As we move into 2026 and beyond, I believe we will see these changes with builders and more people will be buying existing homes and renovating them. I always say that if a house has great “bones” it will last the test of time. Meaning that the structure of the home is solid and intact. Homes were built to last a hundred years ago, which is why we still see beautiful Victorian, Antebellum homes standing, after all this time.

  • All they need now is a little love and creativity to bring them back to their original state. The craftsmanship during that time was unique and exceptionally brilliant, unlike the cheap materials used today in every master community you see.

  • Another thing I hear from clients is that the floor plans of today have no creativity and seem to all look the same. That concern has prompted more people to build custom homes, due to the desire to have exactly what they want, instead of what someone else’s vision is. As mentioned before, renovating an existing home is an excellent idea because you are keeping the current architecture, but just uplifting the spaces to reflect your personality.

I really need one more closet

  • Be careful not to fall into the trap of purchasing a home that is far too big than your family is ever going to be. The rule of thumb is to always purchase a home that has one or two more closets and an additional room in case your family grows and you need more space, so that you don’t have to keep moving every few years.

  • As kids grow up and move away, downsizing can also be a good decision, due to the constant maintenance of a larger home with rooms that you will never use anymore. Tiny Homes are all the rage to help minimize costs and the security of knowing you can practically live rent free in a shorter amount of time.

Whatever your dream is, anything can become a reality when enough thought and determination is put to use. Finding that home can be a challenge and sometimes renovations can take years to complete, but it is worth all the time and effort put into it; to finally live in a home that you have always wanted with no worry of ever having to move again. Something that will last and can be passed down to the younger generations.
