Proficient Purpose
Proverbs 31:19
“She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.”
Creative work
Using my God given gifts and talents…
As we dive deeper into Proverbs 31, we see the pursuit of a woman who is engaged in domestic activities such as spinning and weaving. Suggesting that she is not idly waiting for something to happen, but actively working with her hands. The mention of the spindle and distaff represents craftsmanship and skill in creating garments and textiles, which were invaluable traits in ancient times. It shows a commitment to her household and family, emphasizing the joy and duty that comes with such tasks.
In today’s modern world, we can see this as a representation of diligence and thoughtfulness in our daily work. We all have gifts and talents that God has placed within us, and as we grow in Christ, we must learn to take care of our responsibilities, whether at home or work. It expresses our self-awareness and finding purpose in what we do. This hardworking spirit reflects dedication, which we should aspire to exhibit, honoring and serving those around us, while using those gifts He gave to us.
Finding Joy
I can be happy in everything I do…
Even though cultures may change, the core values of love, care, and dedication to family remain constant, placing the focus on a woman’s role within the family. This passage reminds us that every little act that we do, be it spinning yarn or raising children, everything has intrinsic value and purpose. It encourages us to view our work as a reflection of our character and love.
The Bible speaks of hands which are often used to illustrate strength and the ability to create or perform tasks, working diligently and finding joy and fulfillment in those works. When we engage our hands in meaningful work, we also engage our hearts, connecting our efforts with love and dedication. The “spindle” and “distaff” are tools used in weaving; pointing to creativity and skill, representing the potential for creative expression.
Humility Rewards
You are significantly unique to God…
As a mother, wife or even if you are single, when we do the simplest of things like baking, cleaning, spending time with God and nurturing others, we are creating an environment where love flourishes. In all our efforts, we should strive to make our homes a place of warmth and love, just as the scriptures describe, using our skills diligently for that purpose. As we pray and seek God, we find from Him the direction He has for us, while using those “instinctual” gifts that He so lovingly gave to accomplish His will.
It is not by our own strength or pride that we elevate ourselves to a particular position just to soothe our ego, but instead, it is with humility that God rewards us. No one is above another and each gift we have, no matter how small we think it is, was given thoughtfully and purposefully because God knew that only you could achieve it. No one else has your calling or can walk in your shoes. We do not envy others and what they have accomplished, we are all equally important to God.
As you meditate on these scriptures, go about your day, your week and every day embracing those wonderful talents you have, to increase the Kingdom of God and help others, all the while growing in grace and fulfilling your purpose. Your joy comes from living for Christ and knowing that He set the stage for all of us to live a life in peace and happiness. Stay true to the Word; it will never let you down or mislead you.
“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.”
